Here's a color-coded tangle of neighborhoods for you. These
5 neighborhoods are part of a group of neighborhoods which make up
the Five Points area of Raleigh (depending on your
definition of Five Points). They lie to the northeast of the
intersection of Glenwood, Whitaker Mill and Fairview (which defines
the official center of Five Points).
Here you will find many wonderful homes with a wide range of prices
and styles - cottage, bungalow, craftsman, colonial revival, ranch,
modern and more - from modest to magnificent.
Vanguard Park Historic District touches 4 of these
5 neighborhoods. The Historic District is a "U" shaped
area roughly bounded by the roads McCarthy, Whitaker Mill, Pine, Reaves
and Hudson.
Vanguard Park (Pink)
is the oldest of these 5 neighborhoods. The entire neighborhood
is included in Vanguard Park historic district. With a sprinkling
of homes built in the teens and another sprinkling in the 40's, most
of Vanguard Park was built during the 1920's and 1930's.
Villa Park (Purple)
- a nice neighborhood of modest homes built during the 1940's. Much
of Villa Park is included in Vanguard Park historic district.
Oxford Park (Light
Blue) has a feel similar to Cameron Village
neighborhood. It was developed during the 1940's and 1950's
and showcases the popular ranch style home of that time. A very
small portion of Oxford Park is included in the historic district.
Though you will find some younger infill, this neighborhood
demonstrates the post WWII residential boom in Raleigh. The
most significant infill can be found on Oxford street overlooking
Fallon Park.
Fallon Oaks (Orange)
is a small cul-de-sac neighborhood of about 11 upscale homes developed
during the 1980's. Fallon Oaks has no properties in Vanguard
Park historic district.
White Oak Forest (Blue)
is easily the most expensive of these five neighborhoods. The
impressive homes of White Oak Forest were built over a 20 year period
from the 1930's to the 1950's.
